Underscored Proscenium Grind

This work illuminates the rhythms of the body, exploring rhythm somatically, stylistically, and sociologically. The histories embedded in the dancers' bodies act as a platform to study the hierarchies of different rhythms and dance styles. The piece recognizes the power dynamics at play regarding race, gender, and class, and attempts to dismantle normalized hierarchies.

Dr. Andy Thierauf, a Philadelphia based percussionist, composed original music for the dance. Thierauf and his partner Sean Thomas-Boyt performed the score live at the premiere of 'Underscored Proscenium Grind' in the Converge Dance Festival in May of 2016. In April 2017, Linder, Thierauf, and Boyt re-vamped the work with five new dancers at the Iron Factory in Philadelphia.
